Gary Peter Smith

Gary P. Smith, 76, of Middletown died unexpectedly on Saturday May 7, 2016. He was the husband of Frances A. Rodrigues Smith. They were married for 46 years. Born in Newport, March 8, 1940 he was the son of the late Frederick and Clarissa (Champlin) Smith. He graduated in 1959 from Rogers High School. He started work at age 16 at Transit Line later known as RIPTA. He retired in 1996. He served in the National Guard for 6 years. He was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church.Since retiring he loved traveling around the country in his RV, he especially enjoyed his annual winter visit to Disney's Fort Wilderness. He took much pride in having the shiniest RV in the campground. He also loved racing cars in his younger days, was an avid NASCAR fan, and loved all cars Dodge. He also enjoyed snorkeling when he wasn't on the road traveling. Besides his wife he leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Holly C. Nobert and her husband Richard, and Dawn M. Drake and her husband Tod all of Middletown; and, his one and only beloved granddaughter Julia E. Drake also of Middletown; two sisters, Clarissa Smith of Middletown and Patricia Dixon of Shelly, Idaho; several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Frederick W. Smith.Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 13, 2016, from 4-7pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at 9am from Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway at Vernon Avenue, Newport.
