George M. Chaplin

George Manton Chaplin, 93, died September 12, 2016 at Newport Hospital.He was the husband of the late Dorothy C. (Harlow) Chaplin.Born on March 11, 1923 in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late Arthur W. and Florence (Luther) Chaplin.George served in the United States Army Airforce during World War II. He attended Providence College, Barrington College, Salve Regina College and the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA. For 28 years he worked at Aquidneck Island Creamery as Vice President in charge of sales, retiring in1968. He was ordained an Episcopal Priest and served St. Mark's church in Warren, RI for the next twenty years. During his retirement he served as Minister at the Church of Holy Cross in Middletown, RI. He was a member of the Middletown VFW #4487, the DAV of Warren, RI, the American Legion of Newport, and the Middletown Rotary. George was also a charter member of Kiwanis Club and a volunteer at St. Clare Home.He is survived by two daughters, Janet Chaplin Skenfield of Murphys, CA, and Susan Chaplin of Troy, MI; a brother, Arthur W. Chaplin Jr. of Portsmouth RI; eight grandchildren and twelve greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by a daughter, Christine Chaplin Gavan; a son, Jeffrey Paul Chaplin; a sister, Eleanor Bryant; and four brothers, Kenneth Chaplin, Arnold D. Chaplin, Robert B. Chaplin, and Samuel L. Chaplin.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. A memorial service in his memory will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at 11:00am, at St. Marys Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth.Burial will be private.
