George Mcnemer Schwartze

September 26, 1917 — April 6, 2002

George Schwartze, 84, of 97 Belmont Drive Portsmouth, died Saturday, April 6, 2002 at Steere House Nursing Home Providence, RI. He was the husband of the late Aloise Jane Bartlett Schwartze. Born in Washington, DC on September 26, 1917, he was the son of the late Dr. Erich Schwartze, MD and the late Annie Andrews Schwartze. Mr. Schwartze graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Government and Politics. Mr. Schwartze retired as a Commander in the US Navy. His active duty was from 1942-1965, during which time he served at the Newport Naval War College. Cdr. Schwartze was the Executive Officer of the battleship USS Massachusetts while it was stationed in Fall River, MA from 1966-1968. After his retirement from the Navy, he worked for the State of Rhode Island Department of Mental Health, Retardation and Hospitals from 1973-1978 as a research technician. In addition, he worked in the Newport School Department as a social studies teacher from 1973-75, and previously at Middletown High School as a geography teacher from 1968-73. He also served as a substitute teacher. He was a former member of St. Mary?s Episcopal Church, the Retired Naval Officers Assocation. He also served on the Vestry at Trinity Church. Mr. Schwartze sang with the US Chorusters of Newport and enjoyed gardening, and was a HAM radio operator, call letter KA1JCS. He is survived by two sons George M Schwartze, Jr. of Saunderstown, RI, and Alan A. Schwartze of Newport, RI, two daughters Phyllis Inlow of Middletown, RI, and Janet Harvey of Wakefield, RI, a brother Erich W. Schwartze, MD of Waco, TX, and 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister Helen Saunders. A Eucharist of the Ressurection will be held Wednesday, April 10, at 11:00am in St. Marys Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Marys Churchyard in Portsmouth. Donations may be made in his memory to Alzheimers Association, 245 Waterman Street, Suite 306, Providence, RI 02906 or to the St. Marys Church Memorial Fund, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
