George W. Christy

George Christy, age 83, of Middletown, Rhode Island, peacefully passed away on August 25, 2018.George was born on February 7, 1935 in Skoura, Sparta, Greece. He came to this country at an early age to better his education and to earn the priviledge of becoming a US Citizen. After school, he proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean conflict.Following an honorable discharge from the Army, George was an entrepreneur in several business ventures in Mays Landing, New Jersey where he lived for many years. George earned his BA in Business Administration at NYU, later serving as President for the Hellenic Studies Department. He was also chairman of the fundraising program at the Richard Stockton College in NJ.He leaves his two brothers Dino Christy and his wife Helen, Matthew Christy and his wife Zoe Christy, all of Middletown and a sister Demetria Georgopoulos in Skoura, Greece. He also leaves seven nephews and three nieces, cousins and many close friends.He was preceded in death by his parents Vasilos Christopoulos and Christina (Corsones) Christopoulos and a sister Georgia Proakis of Springfield, MA.Visitation will be held Thursday, August 30, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames St, Newport, followed by a funeral service in the church at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Newport Memorial Park, Howland Ave, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, PO Box 427, Newport, RI 02840.
