George W. Leary

George W. Leary, 75, of 36 Bull St. Newport, died Saturday, September 14, 2002 at Veterans Hospital Providence, RI.He was the husband of Janice SullivanLeary. Born in New York, NY, on August 24, 1927, he was the son of the late George and Anna Feredette Leary. Mr. Leary was a Deputy Sheriff with Newport County Sheriffs Department from 1971 until his retirement in 1989. He later drove a van for the James L. Maher Center in Middletown. Earlier he had worked for the former Manuel Bros. Moving Co. He had owned and operated the Mid Town Spa at 254 Thames St. Mr. Leary was a 41year member of the North End Club and a Life Time member of the Newport Lodge of Elks. As a young man he had been active as a scout leader with the Boy Scouts of America and had been a Coach in the Little League organization. He was a Veteran of World War II serving with the Army Air Corps and was recalled to active duty to serve in the new US Air Force during the Korean War. Besides his wife he leaves two sons George W. Leary Jr. and James P. Leary both of Newport, RI, his daughter Janel F. Leary of Barrington, RI, two brothers Thomas Leary of Newport, RI, and Robert Leary of Warwick, RI, his sister Virginia L. Hudson of Portsmouth, RI, and two grandchildren Meaghan and Shawn Leary both of Newport.He was the brother of the late Peter Lamontagne, Bruce Leary and Georgette Nutter. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday September 18, 2002 at 8:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church, Broadway at 9:00am. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Donations may be made in his memory to the RI Veterans Home, Patient Activities Fund, 480 Metacom Avenue, Bristol, RI 02809.
