Dr. George M. Walsh, 86, of Quincy, MA, Savannah, GA, and Portsmouth, RI, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025. He was the husband of the late Dianne F. "Dee" (Lillie) Walsh his first wife and the late Pamela Quinlan Mateu his second wife.
Born June 30, 1938, in Bayonne, New Jersey he was the son of the late William G. and Sylvia (Fields) Walsh. Raised in Cranford, NJ, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Bachelor of Science, 1960) and University of Rhode Island (Masters of Science, 1964 and PhD, 1972). Following MIT, George joined Raytheon Submarine Signal Division in Portsmouth, R.I where he spent his career, earning thirteen patents until retiring in 1994. He later created Undersea Strategies.
Following his retirement, George spent his time traveling to Europe, collecting Wizard of Oz books and building steam engines and locomotives - ever the engineer and tinkerer.
George is survived by his son, Andrew "Drew" G. (Cyndy Kira) Walsh of Virginia and Hawaii, his daughter, Stephanie-Anne "Stevie" Walsh of Quincy, MA, and his brother, William R. (Helen) Walsh of Vermont and nephews, nieces and grandchildren. He is also survived by Pamela's sons James and John Mateu.
A celebration of life will occur in Newport, R.I. from 1:30pm to 4:30pm on Monday, 9 June 2025 at the Glen Manor House (3 Frank Coelho Dr, Portsmouth, RI 02871). The family requests your best stories and a RSVP to celebrateGMW@gmail.com if you can attend. All are welcome.
