Gilbert M. Brownell, Jr., age 86, of Middletown, RI, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025. Born on May 29, 1939, Gilbert moved to Middletown as an infant and made it his lifelong home, deeply rooted in the community and the coastline he loved.
Gilbert was educated at Hazard Memorial Catholic School and later at De La Salle Academy. As a young man, he worked alongside his father in the commercial fishing industry, developing a lasting respect for the ocean and the hardworking communities that rely on it. He went on to proudly serve his country as an Aviation Electrician in the United States Navy.
After his military service, Gilbert dedicated 25 years to the State of Rhode Island as a Conservation Officer, a role that perfectly suited his love of wildlife, the outdoors, and environmental stewardship. Upon retiring, he returned to the sea-this time as a lobsterman-continuing the maritime traditions that shaped his life.
Gilbert's hobbies reflected his hands-on spirit and appreciation for simple joys. He spent countless hours woodworking in his garage, often accompanied by neighbors and friends who stopped by to share stories or lend a hand. He enjoyed genealogy, bird hunting, and any opportunity to be outside near the ocean.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Marjorie Brownell; his beloved children, Jennifer Brownell and Carl Brownell and his wife, Emilina Hauch Brownell; his siblings, John Brownell, Sandra Delaross, and Catherine Alvarez; and several nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his steady presence, quiet humor, and lifelong connection to the sea and the community he cherished.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at 10:00am at St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Rd., Middletown.
