Middletown, RI - Gloria Irene Oliveira, 79, of Middletown, RI, died on Sunday May 13, 2018 at the Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown.
Born in Newport, RI on May 20, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Alvaro and the late Mary (Braga) Oliveira.
Gloria graduated from Rogers High School Class of 1957. After graduation she joined the United States Air Force and received her basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. After basic training she was assigned to West Palm Beach Air Force Base in Florida. There she worked for the Captain and 1st Sergeant of the female squadron on base. She was transferred to the C-130 Squadron that was assigned there. She was a member of the Womens Basketball Team and Softball Team on base, playing at different A. F. Bases in Florida. After her discharge from the Air Force, she worked at the Newport City Hall and Restivo Brothers in Newport. She played softball for the Paddock Cafe. Gloria worked for Teledyne Corporation in Redlands, CA until her return to Newport. She worked for Rogers High School in the Guidance Department until her retirement. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Green Valley Country Club. She made a hole in one on the 12th hole at Green Valley. She loved playing golf at Green Valley with all her friends she met during her years there. She was a member of the Portuguese American Women Civic League.
She is survived by her brothers; Antone Oliveira and his wife Nancy E. of Newport, RI, Charles Oliveira and his wife Mary of Middletown, RI, George Oliveira and his wife Nancy F. of Portsmouth, RI, her sister Mimi Oliveira of Newport RI and Miami, FL, her sisters-in-law Norma Oliveira, sister-in-law Ann Oliveira and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Richard Oliveira, and Alvaro Oliveira.
The family would like to thank the Staff at the Grand Islander for their loving and compassionate care that she received while she was there.
Her funeral will be held on Friday May 18, 2018, at 9:00am, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am, in Jesus Savior Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Calling hours will be held on Friday May 18, 2018 from 8:00am 9:00am, in the funeral home.
