Harold "Mac" Mccray

Harold "Mac" McCray, 85, of Portsmouth died Thursday, December 1, 2016 at home.Born on April 9, 1931 in Scotch Plains, NJ, he was the son of the late Ernest Sr. and Florence (Pettiford) McCray.He was the former husband of the late Rose (Ribeiro) McCray and the father of the late Melanie (McCray) Burden. Mr. McCray proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Upon his retirement from the Navy he worked at the Naval Underwater Systems Center for over 20 years.He enjoyed watching sports especially the PGA, Major League Baseball and over the past few years Major League Soccer. He was an excellent cook and prepared culinary delights for the family. He liked to garden and was happiest when he was completing home repairs and DIY projects that often found their way as gifts for family and friends.He is survived by his children, Joel McCray and his wife Jacqueline and Cheryl McCray of Newport, RI, his son-in-law Sige Burden of Athens, GA, his grandsons Jason Andrews and his wife Lily of New York, Brandon Andrews and Trenton Andrews of Georgia, Zachary McCray and Dante McCray of Newport, Zildjian Baptista, Shaquille Alleyne, and granddaughter Laura Baptista, two great grandsons, a great granddaughter, his brother Russell McCray and his sisters Lois Langford and Ruth Gamer and many nephews and nieces.He was preceded in death by his brothers Ernest McCray Jr., Robert McCray, and Edward McCray and his sisters Alice Carter, Shirley Burbank, and Helen Todd.
