Hazel Etta Washington

Midletown, - Hazel E. Washington, 95, of John Clarke Nursing Center 600 Valley Road Midletown, formerly of 28B Edgar Court, Newport, died Friday, October 25, 2002 at John Clarke Nursing Center Middletown, RI. Born in Portsmouth, RI on March 22, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Silas T. and Mary L. Williams Washington Educated in Newport, she was a graduate of Rogers High School. Miss. Washington worked for the William A. Sherman Family of Newport for many years and resided with her father until he passed at the age of 96. They were both members of the Shiloh Baptist Church; she later became a life long member of the Community Baptist Church. Miss Washington was an active member of the Edward King Center also volunteering at the Salvation Army. She was a member of the Newport Branch NAACP. She was a former member of the Friendship Club of Newport, the Women?s Home League of Salvation Army and a former member of the Bondage Group of Trinity Church. Miss Washington loved to read and was a very good sports fan until her eyesight began to fade. She is survived by a cousin Edward L. Paige of Newport, RI, two nephews Silas P. Washington Jr. of Seattle, Washington, Jack Landron Washington of New York City, New York. One niece Geraldine Strickland of Memphis, Tennesee one sister in law GladysWashington and several cousins.She was the sister of the late Silas P. Washington, Samuel T. Washington, John J. Washington, James Washington and Mary M. Washington and Ethel Washington. Funeral Services will be held Thursday October 31, 2002, at 11:00AM in Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, Newport. Burial will be in Braman Cemetery in Newport.Donations in her memory may be made to the Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, Newport, RI 02840.
