Newport, RI - Helen Elizabeth Troy Dolphus, 95, of Newport, RI, was called by the Lord Jesus on Saturday, June 25, 2011, just three days after her 95th birthday. She died peacefully with her loving family members present.She was the wife of the late Garfield Dolphus. Born in Newport, RI on June 22, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Clara Dennis Troy and the late Chief Warrant Officer John W. Troy USN.Helens father lost his life aboard the cruiser U.S.S. Chicago when it collided with the ship Silverpalm off the coast of Point Sur, California in 1933. She was the oldest of five children and was like a second mother to her younger siblings. Helen graduated from Rogers High School in 1935 and went on to college. She worked for John J. Sullivan Insurance and following her marriage, she worked for over 30 years for the AAA office in Newport until her retirement. Helen was an avid Bingo player and played the piano and loved music. She was a former member of the Newport Business and Professional Womans organization and a long time member of the Eastern Star. She is a former member of the Middletown Senior Center Chorus the Dawn Tones. She was also a long standing member of the King House Senior Center and Middletown Senior Center.Helen married Garfield Dolphus, a navy man and moved to Brooklyn, NY. While in Brooklyn, her husband worked at the Brooklyn navy yard and was later transferred to the Atomic Energy Commission and moved to Knoxville, TN. After her husband retired, they moved back to Newport.Helen leaves her son, James G. Dolphus and his wife Ellen, four granddaughters, Mary Shaw and her husband Greg, Laura Simmons and her husband James, Baxley Dolphus, all of Athens, GA, Michelle Hutto and her husband Kevin of Tifton, GA. She also leaves three great-grandchildren, Sarah and Ansley Hutto of Tifton, GA, James Simmons V. of Athens, GA, and two sisters, Marcia Logan of Middletown and Constance ONeill of Newport and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her sister Florence Logan formerly of Newport and her brother John W. Troy Jr. formerly of Worcester, MA.At Helens request, calling hours are omitted.Her funeral will be held on Thursday June 30, 2011, at 11:00am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 61 Poplar Street, Newport. Burial will be in St. Marys Churchyard in Portsmouth.
