Helen Virginia McLyman, 97, of Portsmouth died Friday, February 9, 2018 at home in Portsmouth. Helen was born August 4, 1920 in New London, CT. She is the daughter of the late Frederick and the late Helen (Lynch) Michaels. She was the wife of the late Edward James McLyman, Jr. They were married for 58 years before his passing. Helen worked as a telephone operator during World War II.Helen grew up in the Fifth Ward. She and her husband were high school sweethearts.Helen was a graduate of Rogers High School. She was a career Navy wife, and was very active in the Navy Relief, and the Navy Wives clubs.She is survived by her daughter Virginia Ann Marren of Portsmouth, and six granddaughters Shannon Jacklich of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Heather Burgess (William) of Wilmette, Ill, Kelly O'Connell (Christopher) of Portsmouth, RI, Meaghan Moe (Christopher) of Portsmouth, RI; Jennifer Molod (Jon) of Hermosa Beach, CA; Lisa Walton of England; and 12 great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her son Edward James McLyman III.Calling hours will be Monday, February 12 from 8:00am-9:30am at Connors Funeral Home 55 West Main Road in Portsmouth.The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
