Henry X. McCarthy, 80, of Portsmouth died Monday, October 24, 2016 at Orchard View Manor in East Providence, RI. Mr. McCarthy was born March 25, 1936 in Yonkers, NY, the son of the late Henry J. McCarthy and Ethel (Kelly) Del Nero.He was married to the late Barbara (Cherry) McCarthy for 43 years.Mr. McCarthy attended Providence College, moving onto Stonehill where he was avidly involved in basketball and loved to reminisce about his position as starting center. After leaving Stonehill he spent four years serving our country in the US Army. "Harry" spent 25 years as the general manager of Barry Pontiac in Newport, R.I. Following that he dove into one of his passions with his firearm business. Prior to retirement, his last employment was with Raytheon Company.He was known as "the mayor" and took pride in the friendships he developed over the years. He also got much enjoyment out of his experiences on the E.D.C. in Portsmouth. He was a lover of reading, crosswords and history. You could find him most Saturday nights, sitting around his kitchen table playing a good game of Trivial Pursuit. He was a dedicated father and grandfather. While there were many things that brought him happiness, being a husband to Barbara gave him the most joy.He is survived by his daughter, Shannon Condon of Tiverton and his son, Ryan McCarthy of Portsmouth, RI, and his granddaughter Eilish Ryan Condon.Calling hours will be held on Friday October 28, 2016, from 5-8pm in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.His funeral service will be held on Saturday October 29, 2016, at 10am in the funeral home.Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown.
