Obituary

James Joseph Medeiros, 80, of Middletown, Rhode Island, died July 19, 2026, at R.I. Hospital. He was the husband of Kathleen R. (Spero) Medeiros. They celebrated 58 1/2 years together. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, on July 14, 1946, he was the son of the late Manuel Estrella Medeiros and Frances Grace (Faria) Medeiros.

Jim lived in Middletown most of his life and had a great love and appreciation of Aquidneck Island's history and architecture. He was a 1964 graduate of Middletown High School and a 1980 graduate of Johnson & Wales University with a degree in accounting.

He was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed at Irwin Army Hospital in Ft. Riley, Kansas, and at the Medical Dispensary 90th Replacement Battalion in Bien Hoa, Vietnam.

He worked for the Department of the Navy for over 36 years. He started working at the Naval Supply Center, Newport and had the honor of being the first person drafted out of the Center to serve in the military since World War II. When he was discharged from the Army, he returned to the Supply Center, then the Naval Education and Training Center, Newport. In 1977, he took a position as the Administrative Officer at the Trident Command and Control Maintenance Facility and was a "Plank Owner" of the Naval Command. In 1992, he was transferred to the Naval Undersea Warfare Center as a Financial Program Analyst for submarine programs and retired in 2004. He then worked for several years as a tour transportation coordinator for a tour company serving cruise ships visiting Newport.

Enjoying over twenty years of retirement cruising in their RV, Jim and Kathy became "snowbirds," spending many winters in Florida with wonderful friends. Driven by his love for history, they extended their travels to Italy, Ireland, Lisbon, and several trips to the Azores. While he cherished these adventures, Jim most enjoyed spending time with his son, daughter, and their families. His grandchildren, in particular, brought him immense pride and joy. Jim was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, James M. Medeiros (Tracy), and their children Catherine, Allison, and Madeline of East Greenwich, Rhode Island; and a daughter, Lisa A. (Medeiros) Ennis (Brendan), and their children Liam, Owen, Rory, and Sean of North Kingstown, R.I. He is also survived by his sister, Jane Medeiros Tavares (Daniel) of Osprey, Florida, and Newport, R.I., and many loved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice. Calling hours will be respectfully omitted at Jim's request. A Memorial Mass will be held at Jesus Saviour Church on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 10 AM. Burial will be private.
