James P. Sullivan

James P. Sullivan, of Middletown, died peacefully at Newport Hospital on March 1, 2018, after a brief illness.Jim was born in Newport, RI, on June 28, 1940, the son fo the late Carrie Frederick Sullivan and Michael Francis Sullivan. Jim grew up in Newport. He graduated from the former St. Mary's Grammar School and Rogers High School.After graduation from high school, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served as a SGT in California. Upon discharge, he returned to Newport. He worked briefly at Quonsett Point and later at Sikorsky Aircraft in Connecticut.Newport called Jim home again. He applied for a position with the US Postal Service, where he worked until his retirement. Jim moved to Middletown in 1976 and enjoyed a quiet life there. He was an avid reader, especially American history. Jim enjoyed country music, sports, a good game of bingo and a clam boil, minus the clams.He is survived by his brother Michael (Patricia), his brother Frederick, sister Marilyn Bunnewith, and his dear friend, Mary Perry. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Jim was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Mary "Sis" Sullivan, and his brother-in-law, George E. Bunnewith.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, from 4:00-7:00pm, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at 1:30pm, in the funeral home. Burial will be private at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.Donations in Jim's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
