It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Janice Mary (Smith) Fisher, who left us on November 23rd, 2025. She was 82 years old. She was the wife of the late James Clifford Fisher for 33 years.
Born in Newport on May 29th, 1943, she was the daughter of Harold J. Smith and Norma A. (Ryan) Smith. She attended St. Joseph's School, Thompson Middle School, and Rogers High School. She worked at Egan's Laundry in Newport after graduation. After marrying Jimmy in 1963, they resided on Aquidneck Island before moving to Worcester, Massachusetts in 1973, then to Swansea, Massachusetts in 1981, where she spent the rest of her life. Janice had worked at Shoppers World and Zayre's. In Swansea, she worked at Edgar's department store at the Swansea Mall and then Sears. She worked at Ashmont Hardware Store from 1991-2002 and worked for the Swansea School Lunch Program for twenty years before enjoying a long retirement. She was a communicant of St. Dominic's Church in Swansea.
When she was younger Janice enjoyed bowling league and crafting. She always enjoyed going to Bingo, especially in her later years. She liked to play her favorite numbers in the lottery and try to win on her scratch off tickets. She enjoyed visiting her favorite spots in Newport, reading, and shopping, even on HSN and QVC, and doing word searches. She enjoyed watching golf and was a Patriots and Celtics fan. She loved Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Jalen Brown, Jason Tatum, and Patrick Mahomes. She kept up with local events by listening to talk radio and watching the news. She enjoyed good humor, laughing, and good company. She delighted in her children's and grandchildren's accomplishments and enjoyed being able to share in them. She found contentment with being by the water and finding beauty in the people, places, and things around her.
Janice is survived by her three children, Jennifer Fisher of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Jill (David) Gilmore of Salisbury, Maryland, and Joy (Heath) Meetis of Assonet, Massachusetts. Janice also leaves six grandchildren, Brianne, Braelyne, Caroline, Meredith, Olivia, and Zachary. Janice was preceded in death by her husband James C. Fisher, her son James C. Fisher II (Jamie), and her sisters, Ellen L. Smith and Karen A. (Smith) Codling.
Janice will be remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness, strength, her love for her family, and her humor.
