St. Mary's Episcopal Church
11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Some people make their mark through grand gestures. Jean Wilson made hers through the countless small ways she showed up for others. She gave her time freely, found beauty in nature and music, and embraced the community she called home. Jean, 88, of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2026, leaving behind a life rich in service, connection, and purpose.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 30, 1938, Jean was the daughter of the late John and Minnie Ainslie. A graduate of Simmons College in Boston, she went on to build a successful career as a Station Manager until retirement with the United States Postal Service. She maintained a connection to her alma mater through the Southeast Simmons Alumni Club.
For Jean, being part of a community meant more than simply belonging to it. She truly believed in contributing to it. Through her involvement at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, she participated in the Knitting Club and volunteered her time supporting the church's soup kitchen and Collation Ministry outreach efforts. Her appreciation for the arts, history, and culture was reflected in her involvement with the Newport Classical Music Society and the Preservation Society of Newport County. She also enjoyed the friendships and activities offered through the Newport Senior Center.
Jean was involved with Rhode Island's National Wildlife Refuge and was a cherished volunteer for 20 years at Sachuest Point. She managed the gift shop for many years working with local artists to make the gift shop a unique curated space, trained new volunteers and served as critical support for staff, supporting a place she valued. Whether appreciating a piece of classical music, spending time in nature, or lending a helping hand, Jean found meaning in staying engaged with the world around her.
Jean is survived by her two daughters, Lisa Wilson and Kathy Wilson; her twin sister, Joan Gundal; her grandchildren, Marisol Monahan (and husband Ulisses Reis Sant'ana) and Jack Wilson and several nieces and nephew, In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her companion, Andre Levesque.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Friday, November 13, 2026, at 11:00 am at St Mary's Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. All are welcome to a Collation following the mass.
