Joan (Fischer) Beachnau of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a legacy of beauty, kindness, creativity, and light that will live on in all who knew her.

Joan was the beloved wife of Michael Beachnau and a devoted mother to her son, Justin (Emily) Beachnau, and daughter, Christina (John) McCarthy. She was a deeply cherished "Gigi" to Reagan, Madison, Teddy, Amelia, and Maggie, who brought her endless joy and were truly the light of her life. Joan is also survived by her mother, Elizabeth Fischer, and her sister, Anne (John) Morahan. She is reunited in peace with her father, Donald Fischer, and her brother, James Fischer.

Joan was born on February 7, 1953, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with a remarkable creative spirit. She studied clothing and textile design at Mansfield University, where she cultivated the artistic talents that would become such a defining part of her life. She began her career as a dress buyer for Kaufmann's Department Store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before becoming the head seamstress at Bridal Beginning. Joan was an exceptionally talented master seamstress who could envision, design, and create almost anything with fabric and a sewing machine. Her creativity seemed limitless, and the pieces she made were expressions of both artistry and love, bringing warmth and elegance into the lives and homes of those around her.

An avid gardener and proud member of the Newport Garden Club, Joan shared her love of flowers, nature, and community with those around her. Her gardens reflected the same grace, beauty, and care with which she lived her life. Joan was also a deeply loyal friend whose warmth and genuine spirit drew people to her everywhere she went. She had a remarkable ability to make friends effortlessly and made everyone around her feel welcomed, valued, and loved. Her friendships were lasting and meaningful; a reflection of the generosity and light she carried within her.

After earning her master's degree in holistic counseling from Salve Regina University, Joan served as a chaplain at Women & Infants Hospital, where she offered comfort, compassion, and spiritual support to countless patients and families. Her kindness, empathy, and calming presence touched many people and reflected the deep care she carried for others.

She found peace and happiness at the beach, surrounded by sunshine, flowers, and the people she loved most. Joan lived a beautiful life filled with love, generosity, creativity, and compassion. She had a way of making others feel seen, comforted, and deeply loved. Above all else, Joan was an incredible mother and grandmother whose love was unwavering and profound. Her presence was a gift, and her memory will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.

A funeral service celebrating Joan's life will be held on Monday, June 1, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Church in Newport, Rhode Island, with a gathering to follow at Queen Anne's Loft.
