Joan L. Smith

Joan L. Smith, 66, passed away on April 19, 2018 in Middletown, RI. Joan was born in Providence, RI on January 12, 1952 to Alfred Villatico, Sr and Lillian (Cann) Villatico. Joan grew up in Cranston, RI and later moved to Middletown, RI. She dedicated her career to serving the homeless population in the Newport County area and served as resident director of a shelter for homeless women and children; there she tirelessly fought to respect, honor, and help shelter residents. She later returned to Cranston and helped care for her loving mother. Upon her return to Middletown, Joan enjoyed her last few years living at West House. She was a longtime member of St. Lucys Church in Middletown.Joan is survived by her children, Alyson Smith of Toronto, Ontario and Matthew Smith of Providence, RI. She also leaves son-in-law Robert Patton and her beloved granddaughter Lucy Lillian Patton of Toronto, Ontario, as well as siblings Nancy Villatico of Cranston, RI, Karen Reilly (brother-in-law Richard Perkins) of Warwick, RI, and Alfred Villatico Jr of Warwick, RI.She was preceded in death by Alfred Villatico, Sr (Father) and Lillian Villatico (Mother).Calling hours will be held on Thursday, the 26th of April from 4:00pm-7:00pm at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Funeral services will be on Friday the 27th of April at 10:30am at St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Rd, Middletown.
