John Clinton McCarthy, of Newport passed away on November 12, 2016. He was born on March 25, 1928 in Newport, RI to John C. McCarthy and Virginia (Dennis) McCarthy. John is predeceased by his treasured wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Kiernan McCarthy.John is survived by his daughter: Cheryl (Jack) Upchurch, son Brian (Pamela) McCarthy, and son David (Marissa) McCarthy. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Erin (Steve) Liechty, Timothy (Meaghan) McCarthy, Gavin McCarthy, and Kiernan McCarthy; and great granddaughter, Phoebe McCarthy.John grew up in the Newport Point Section where his family roots date back to the late 1600's. He was one of 39 grandchildren. John loved telling stories about living on the Point during the 30s and 40s. He enjoyed accompanying his grandfather to Battery Park to raise and lower the flag.He was a World War II veteran who was drafted into the Army and served with the 109th Combat Engineers. He was with the Seventh Army with NATO Forces in Europe.John worked for 22 years at J.T. O'Connell on Long Wharf and retired from Newport Hospital in the late 80s. After John retired, he enjoyed walking the Ocean Drive in Newport almost daily.He met his beloved wife, Betty, working at J.T. O'Connell on Long Wharf in Newport. She was the love of his life and it broke his heart to lose her in 1972.John was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous with over 46 years of sobriety.John was a very spiritual man who handed out almost a thousand rosary beads the last years of his life.In 2015, he came to live with his son, Brian, and daughter-in-law, Pam, where he was loved and cherished to the end.He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.The family would like to thank Brentwood Nursing Home in Warwick, Rhode Island Hospital, and The Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, for their kindness and compassion.
