- John G. Virgadamo, 83, of 26 Norman Street Newport, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.He was the husband of Jean Jennings Virgadamo, of Newport. Born in Newport, RI on February 21, 1919, he was the son of the late Jacchino and Antonia Bruno Virgadamo.Mr. Virgadamo served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He worked for 32 years at the Newport Naval Base. After his retirment in 1976 he worked at St. Georges School on the Custodial Staff, and in the Mail Room at the Naval Base for NSM Security. Mr. Virgadamo was one of the original members of the North End Club. He played semi pro football as a young man, he played baseball for the Point Hummers and also played at Cardines field for the Hunter AC. He was an avid bowler, softball player and hunter. Besides his wife he is survived by his son John J. Virgadamo of Middletown, RI, three daughters Karen M. Ellis of Newport, RI, Pamela J. Virgadamo of East Greenwich, RI, and Janice R. Carlson of Attleboro, MA, two sisters Frances Silvia of Portsmouth, RI, and Lillian Hanson of Las Vegas, NV, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.He was the brother of the late Louis Virgadamo, Michael Virgadamo, George Virgadamo, Rose Thorsell, Carmela Sarris and Mary Sennett. His funeral will be held on Monday, July 1, 2002, at 11:00AM, in the Hambly Funeral Home Brick House, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown.
