John Michael O'Connell of Newport, RI, passed away at the Newport Hospital on November 2, 2025 - All Souls' Day. He was the son of M. Estelle (Hopf) O'Connell and the late Thomas A. O'Connell. He was born on September 6, 1964 in North Kingstown, RI. He graduated from East Greenwich High School and then served 4 years in the United States Navy. After boot camp in Orlando, FL, he served on board the fast frigate USS Gallery in the Mediterranean during the Lebanon crisis. He completed the Radioman course in San Diego and served at the Naval Air Station in Brunswick, ME. He attended CCRI and held several jobs in the area, his favorite being his last job at Stop & Shop, where he made many friends with his pleasant disposition.

Besides his devoted mother with whom he lived and cared for, he leaves his sisters-Margaret Wainscott (William) of Cedar Knolls, NJ, Robynne Thompson (Larry) of Pace, FL, and Debra Hockensmith of Robertsdale, AL, and his brother-Thomas A. O'Connell III (Ruth) of North Kingstown, RI and Lincoln, NH. John also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Dr. James Valente and the other doctors, nurses, and staff at Newport Hospital who cared for John during his stay there.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Lucy's Church, 900 West Maine Road, Middletown, Rhode Island at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 22nd. Burial will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Lucy's Church at 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI 02842 or to the American Cancer Society at PO Box 1994, Pawtucket, RI 02862.
