John P. Means Sr

John P. Means, of Bradenton, FL, formerly of Middletown, RI, born on October 1, 1944, passed into eternal life of September 3, 2016. Beloved husband of Cathy M. Means; son of the late Berthyl W. Means and Rita B. Means, nee Daly; brother of Nancy Rita Kaz of Crete, IL and the late Michael W. Means; loving father of Marie E. Bussiere and John P. Means, Jr. (Mary Ann); grandfather of Katelyn M. Means and Emery N. Means; and uncle of many nieces and nephews.John proudly served in the US Navy from 1963-1967. He graduated from the Lowell Technological Institute with a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1971 and went on to enjoy a 32 year career at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. John was a member of several organizations; including, the IEEE, the NRA, the Disabled American Veterans, the Elks Club, the Knights of Columbus, the National Corvette Restoration Society, the Old Timers RC Flyers, and the Sarasota Silent Flyers."Big John" touched the lives of so many people throughout his career and social activities. Whether it was leadership or friendship, he always strived for excellence. John's greatest accomplishment was caring for his family which was evident in his dedication to his wife, children and grandchildren. John will always be remembered for his kind heart and gentle spirit.Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, Newport, RI with burial to follow in St. Columba Cemetery, 465 Brown's Lane, Middletown, RI.In lieu of flowers, direct memorials can be made to: The Bert W. and Rita B.
