It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Phillip Souza, who departed this life on March 19, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on October 28, 1942, John lived a life marked by dedication and service. He was a beloved figure in the Middletown, Rhode Island community, where he resided for many years.
After graduating from Rogerts High School in Newport, RI, John proudly served in the United States Army, where he played baseball during his service in South Korea. Following his military tenure, he dedicated 21 years to the Middletown Police Force, serving as Patrol Officer #9 and exemplifying a commitment to public safety and community service. During this time, he became a graduate from Salve Regina University, in Newport, RI. After retiring from the police force, he worked as a security officer at Newport Jai Alai. John then started his own oil business, Action Oil, where he was an extremely proud owner. Later on, he also worked for the Newport Daily News as a newspaper deliverer, as well as performing retail deliveries that kept him engaged with the community.
A man of varied interests, John was an avid sports fan, passionately supporting baseball, basketball, and football, and he enjoyed his frequent visits to the casino. He also played baseball for the Middletown Police Department, the Twilight League, and other leagues as well.
John is survived by his loving family, including his beloved wife, Janet Unger, his son Dean Bassinder, his daughter Amanda Schmitt, his son Cameron Unger, and his brother, Paul Souza. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews, David Souza, Gary Souza, Patricia Mackin, Diana Fitzsimons, James Cordeiro, and Nancy Cordeiro. He was also the grandfather to 5 wonderful grandchildren. John is also survived by many great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents Manuel and Margaret Souza, his brother Francis Souza, and his sister, Barbara Cordeiro. His warm spirit and dedication to those he loved will be deeply missed.
Visiting hours will take place on March 25, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Memorial Funeral Home, located at 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. Funeral services will be held on March 26, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the same location. Following the service, John will have a private burial at St. Columba Catholic Cemetery in Middletown, RI.
John Phillip Souza's legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
