John R. Barboza

March 27, 1936 — November 23, 2016

Jesus stepped down from heaven to bring John R. Barboza, Jr. to his eternal home in heaven on November 23, 2016 at 8:45 a.m. at the Golden Gates of Heaven, greeted by his Mom and Dad, John Sr. and Emily (Furtado) Barboza, his brother, Ronald, his three sons, James A. Fairhurst, Bruce Lynn Fairhurst and Scott York Fairhurst, his niece, Tina Camara, and his great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Clauer.John attended the Wilbur School in Somerset and graduated from Somerset High School, as well as earning a Bachelor's of Arts and a Bachelor's of Science Degree from Barrington College. He served 20 years in the US Marine Corp, serving during the Korean War and serving 2 tours in Vietnam War before retiring as a Gunnery Sergeant in 1983, receiving the Combat Action Ribbon, the Presidential Unit Citation; the Navy Commendation; the Meritorious Unit Citation; the Good Conduct Medal w/5*, the National Defense Service Medal w/1*, the Vietnam Service Medal w/4*, the Civil Action Ribbon, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/1960, the Letter of Appreciation and 3 Meritorious Masts.. John was faithful Elder and held many positions in his church. John was an avid bowler, boater and golfer, and had a green thumb for gardening. He also in his motor home travelled five times a cross country. He was associated with the Cancer Crusades in Fall River, the Portsmouth Camp Association, the Worldwide International Korean Children's Sponsors, the Billy Graham Crusades and VFW Post #5390 in Portsmouth. He work on the I Found it Campaign. For all of you who knew John, he was a wonderful husband, a great father, a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as a great Christian who loved the Lord. He leaves his loving wife, Rose (Freitas) Barboza, his son, Michael Barboza of Warwick, RI; his daughters, Christal Clauer of Portsmouth, RI; Rev. Heidi Rae Johnston of El-Cajon, CA, Sharon Saleh of Rumford, RI and Marie Whalon of Riverside, RI, and his sons, Kevin Barboza and Steve Barboza, both of Seekonk, MA. He was very involved with his 20 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. John also leaves his two sisters, Dolores Arruda and Teresa Barboza, both of Somerset, MA.A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 10:00 AM in Portsmouth United Methodist Church, 2732 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Portsmouth United Methodist Church Discretionary Fund, 2732 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871
