John Walter Porter, Jr

Newport, RI - John Walter Porter, Jr., 83, of 33 Mann Avenue, Newport, died Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at Newport Hospital.He was the husband of Muriel H. Forrest Porter.Born in Fall River, MA on June 27, 1925, he was the son of the late John Walter and Alice Belisle Porter.Mr. Porter served in the Coast Guard during WWII and went on to graduate from Providence College with a BS in chemistry. He retired from the Naval Underwater Systems Center in 1982 having served for 32 years. He was a member of the Toastmasters and was an avid bowler. Besides his wife he leaves a step son Donald J. Hart of Little Compton, RI, he also leaves two sons John Jeff Porter of Nottingham, NH; Christopher Porter of Middletown, RI, and a step daughter Nancy H. Sullivan of Newport, RI. He was the brother of Doris Fletcher of Tiverton, RI, and grandfather of Kathleen Porter, Kristeen Porter, Jeanine Porter and Caroline PorterHe was the step father of the late Michael E. Hart and brother of the late Lorraine Weber. His funeral will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2008 at 3pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
