In addition to his parents, he is proceeded in death by his loving wife of 26 years, Alice Elizabeth Allen (Barfield) of Chelmsford, MA, sister Marie T. (Allen) McCarthy and brother-in-law Terence A. McCarthy both of Cohasset, MA.
He is survived by his stepdaughter Jacqueline M. Virgadamo Reynolds of Chelmsford, MA, stepson Louis G. Virgadamo of Portsmouth, RI, nieces Rebecca M. McCarthy and Nora T. Corpus of Alameda, CA, thirteen great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
Joseph worked for the US Postal Service as a mail carrier, in the neighborhood of West Roxbury, for 50 years until his retirement at the age of 74. He received a Service Award with a letter signed by the Postmaster General honoring his "unique dedication and commitment." His time as a public servant actually dates back longer than 50 years; after graduating from a trade school in Boston, he served four years as an electrician in the US Coast Guard. After his retirement he continued mowing lawns, and had some part-time gigs that kept him active, in addition to running to department stores and having lunch at several of his and his side kick Jackie, favorite restaurants. "He's my Rock" states Jackie, there isn't anything that I wouldn't do for Joe. He also spent many of his summers with his grandchildren and great grandchildren around his pool, cooking hot dogs, hamburgers, and barbecue ribs.
There's nothing this man wouldn't do for anybody. He was the kindest and loving man you could ever meet. Joe would take the shirt off his back if someone needed it. He is definitely going to be missed!
"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breaths away."
