Joseph F. Souza Jr.

Joseph Francis Souza, Jr., born September 12, 1931, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

On October 15, 1955, Joseph married the love of his life, Mary Veronica Pacheco, and together they built a beautiful life anchored in devotion, hard work, and joy. They made their home at 152 Maple Avenue in Middletown, Rhode Island, where they raised their three sons: Joseph Francis Souza III, Dr. Michael Souza, and Peter Souza. Joseph was also a cherished grandfather, and his grandchildren brought him tremendous happiness throughout his life.

For 35 years, Joseph dedicated his career to Salve Regina University, where he served as the Director of Physical Plant. His leadership, knowledge, and steady presence made a lasting impact on the university community. In recognition of his exceptional service, he was honored with the Regina Maris Award, one of the university’s highest distinctions.

A lifelong avid Catholic, Joseph was a devoted member of Jesus Saviour Parish in Newport, Rhode Island, where his faith guided him throughout his life. He was also a Third Degree Knight of Columbus, living out the organization’s principles of charity, unity, and fraternity.

In the mid-1970s, Joseph and Mary discovered a shared passion for ballroom dancing, becoming instructors and sharing their love of dance throughout the community. Outside of work and teaching, he was an avid reader, a lover of history, and a talented woodworker. Joseph had a remarkable mind—curious, thoughtful, and insightful about nearly any subject that came his way.

He will be remembered for his quiet wisdom, his love of learning, his craftsmanship, and the deep devotion he held for his family.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and gentle strength. He will be forever missed.
