Joy Elliott McClintock

September 5, 1929 — June 6, 2026

Joy Elliott McClintock, 96, formerly of Portsmouth, RI and Blenheim-Newport in Middletown, RI passed away on June 6, 2026, after a brief residence at Village House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Lt. Cmdr. Michael McClintock, Sr., USN and sister to the late Sybil Affleck of Brisbane, Australia.

Born on September 5, 1929 in a rural district of Buckingham, England, Joy was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sabina Susannah Mildenhall Elliott of Canterbury. She was educated at The Royal Masonic School for Girls in Rickmansworth Park, Hertfordshire, UK and at the former Westfield College/University of London, UK, where in 1950, she earned a B.A. Honors Degree in Mathematics.

Joy went to work as an Experimental Officer at the then newly established Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) at RAF Aldermaston in West Berkshire, England, where she was employed from 1951-1958 as one of the very first Computer Keyboard Operators. During this time, Joy took courses in the then-emerging field of computer programming offered by IBM in both London and New York City.

In 1958, Joy sailed on the Queen Elizabeth 1 to Australia, where her sister Sybil and many of her mother's numerous relatives were located. She worked at the University of Sydney for three years as a Computer Programmer. In 1961, she relocated to the United States, where she found employment at Brown University and where she worked until 1980. During her years at the university, Joy held positions as a Systems Programmer, as Manager of Systems Programming, and later as Associate Director of the university's Computer Center.

In January 1973, Joy married Michael McClintock, Sr., who at that time was employed as a Merchant Marine Captain. Following her husband's sudden death in April 1980, she decided against continuing a daily commute to Providence, RI from her home in Newport, RI to work once again at Brown University. Joy subsequently found employment as a Defense Contractor with both the Center for War Games and the Naval Underwater Systems Center in Newport until her retirement in September 1997 and at A&T in Middletown, RI as Computer Analyst.

Joy was a lifetime member of Newport Yacht Club and maintained her life-long membership in the Old Masonic Girls Association in Herefordshire in the UK. She was also a long-time member of the Edward King House Senior Center in Newport, as well as the former Newport Athletic Club in Middletown, where she regularly swam up to five days a week for nearly thirty-five years.

Joy is survived by her step-children, Michael McClintock (Mike), Jr. of Oxford, PA, Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) McClintock of Middletown, RI, and David Reid (Moose) McClintock of Portsmouth, RI, as well as her stepsons' children and grandchildren.

In accordance with her wishes, Joy's ashes will be interred with her husband, Michael at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, at a date to be determined. The ceremony will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joy's memory to The Edward King House Senior Center, 35 King Street, Newport, RI 02840.
