Judith Lynn Terry, 78, of Portsmouth passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, October 20, 2017 at Newport Hospital in Newport, RI. She is the daughter of the late George F. and the late Marjorie C. (Wisner) Hickey Jr.She was the wife of the late David F. Terry.Judith was born December 7, 1938 in Flushing, Long Island, NY. Judy moved to Auburn, ME when she was just a child, and graduated, with a Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of Maine, Orono. After graduation, Judy joined the Navy and worked as a Crypto Watch Officer during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After 2 years of service, and a marriage to Dave, she left the Navy to raise a family, finally settling at her home in Portsmouth, RI in 1968. She was self-employed as the "Dough Doll Lady" and sold handmade salt dough ornaments at craft fairs for over 30 years.Judy was an avid supporter of empowering and educating women, and was past president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She was particularly proud of the AAUW STEM program, where she inspired girls to go into Math and Science fields.Judy was also on the board at the MLK Community Center in Newport, where she served as Secretary in 2006 and 2007. During her tenure, she was also on the Institutional Advancement and Facilities committees.In addition to her philanthropy, Judy and Dave spent many years sponsoring foreign students attending the Naval Command Course at the War College.Visiting hours will be held on Friday November 3, 2017 from 4-6pm in the Connors Funeral Home 55 West Main Road in Portsmouth. A Memorial Service, with Military Honors, will be held immediately following at 6pm in the funeral home. Burial will be private.She is survived by her daughter: Alison G. Welsh and her husband Wesley, of Hyannis, MA and two sons Christopher L. Terry and his wife Donna, of Westport, MA and Matthew D. Terry of Coventry, RI. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, Nathan Welsh and his wife Vanessa, Justice Welsh, Mariah Terry and Brandon Terry, as well as her brother David Alpren of Hollywood, FL.In recognition of Judy's time and energy devoted to this organization, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the MLK Community Center, 20 Marcus F.
