Julia Butler Soares

Julia M. Butler Soares, 79, formerly of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, died on Sunday, July 7, 2024. Born in South Kingstown, RI on April 25, 1945. She was the daughter of the late Louis and Margaret (Frazier) Butler.

Lovingly known to family and friends as "June" she grew up Portsmouth and Newport, RI. She worked for many years for the State of RI in the Family Services Department, providing assistance to families in need. In retirement, she enjoyed knitting, reading, and loved cooking. Not one to sit still, she also worked part time at Clements Market Bakery. June's favorite spot to frequent was Second Beach where she would be found listening to the waves and reading a book.

June is survived by her children, Nina Smith of Portsmouth, Frank Caliri of Lexington, MA, and Ann Marie Poon of Norfolk, VA. She leaves a brother Louis Butler of Somerset, MA. Additionally, she leaves her six beloved grandchildren: Aaron, Avery, Alex, Drew, Jenny and Chris. She brought smiles and laughter to all of her many friends at John Clarke Senior Living, Blenheim, and wherever she went.

She is preceded in death by her first husband Anthony Caliri, and her second husband Robert D. Soares, a brother Steven Butler and a sister Patricia Soares.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 24th at 11:00 a.m. at the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a burial to follow at St. Mary's Episcopal Churchyard.
