IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lawrence J
Ferguson
August 8, 1946 – November 12, 2025
Lawrence James Ferguson, known to family and friends as "Larry," passed away peacefully at the age of 79. He was born on August 8, 1946, in Bangor, Maine, the son of the late Donald D. and Barbara L. (Black) Ferguson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Francine (Koniares) Ferguson, and his children Alyssa Ferguson, Colin Ferguson, and Jonathan Ferguson. He was predeceased by his first wife, Kathleen A. (Benevides) Ferguson.
Larry grew up in Portland, Maine, and was a graduate of the University of Southern Maine in Gorham, as well as Rhode Island College in Providence, where he earned his Master's degree in Secondary Education. He was a passionate educator who taught eighth-grade science at Barrington Middle School for 27 years. He loved learning and took great joy in watching his students grow. Throughout his career, he participated in numerous enrichment programs to ensure his students were exposed to the most current scientific advancements. Larry trained with the G.L.O.B.E. Program-an international network connecting schools and scientists-and furthered his studies through programs at Brown University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Rhode Island, Roger Williams University, and the Roger Williams Park Zoo, always seeking new knowledge and technology to bring back to his classroom.
Larry was deeply committed to public service. For more than 20 years, he was involved in government and community leadership. He served as Executive Director of the Rhode Island Democratic Party, District Director for Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy, and as a Member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives for District 91, where he served for 16 years in roles including Subcommittee Chair, member of the House Finance Committee, the Rules Committee, and the House Committee on Health and Welfare, as well as Vice Chairman of the Joint Committee on Veterans' Affairs. He also served as a member of the Bristol Town Council and as Chairman of the Bristol Democratic Town Committee. Larry was a proud member of N.E.S.T. (Network of Educators in Science and Technology) at MIT, the National Education Association, the American Legion, AMVETS, the Italian American War Veterans, and the Rhode Island Democratic Party. He also served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6).
Larry was a kind, generous, and compassionate man who touched countless lives. He filled every room with laughter, joy, and unforgettable moments. He was a loving husband, deeply proud father, and loyal friend. Some of the family's best memories were made relaxing together on the beach and enjoying the beauty of Maine. He had a deep appreciation for all who crossed his path. We are profoundly grateful to have had him in our lives and will miss his smile, warmth, and quick wit dearly.
