Lawrence Glenn

June 30, 1938 — January 17, 2026

Lawrence Randolph Glenn, 87, of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Born on June 30, 1938, in Syosset, New York, he was the son of Joseph Wooderson Glenn of Brooklyn, New York, and Mary “Lady" Love of Memphis, Tennessee. Larry grew up in Syosset, where he attended Westside School and later Friends Academy in Locust Valley. His childhood was filled with wooden boats, jalopy cars, hunting with the Buckram Beagles, and adventures shared with siblings, cousins, and lifelong friends.

Larry studied at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics. During his time at Wharton, he was a member of the U.S. Naval ROTC and St. Anthony Hall (Delta Psi). Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve, serving one year aboard the destroyer USS Charles H. Roan in the Red Sea and two years as Sailing Officer for the small-boat program at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. He later earned an MBA from George Washington University.

In 1963, Larry began a distinguished 30-year career at Citibank, where he became part of Walter Wriston’s leadership team that helped establish the bank as a global financial powerhouse. Over the years, he held numerous senior roles, including Head of the Latin America Division; leader of the Commercial Real Estate business; Chair of the Credit Policy Committee and Chief Loan Officer; Senior Executive Officer for Asia-Pacific; and, finally, Senior Corporate Officer for the US West Coast before retiring in 1994. A 1978 performance review described him as “a highly pragmatic and intuitive businessman… [who] likes to keep a reasonably low profile, letting the record speak for itself, and prefers to manage his people ‘teddy bear’ style—warm and friendly, but willing to use a firm hug when necessary.”

Larry’s Citibank career also brought the family postings in Puerto Rico, Tokyo, and Los Angeles, where they shared wonderful adventures and deepened their knowledge of and appreciation for the wider world.

After retiring from Citibank, Larry established an independent consultancy and spent fifteen rewarding years advising small and mid-size companies. He also served on the boards of Gerber Childrenswear, Holborn Reinsurance, and the Holmes Protection Group.

Larry’s professional success was matched by a deep commitment to service and philanthropy. He joined the Coast Guard Foundation Board in 1997, where he became a passionate advocate for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s sailing program and helped develop the state-of-the-art Leadership 44 training fleet.

He also put his financial expertise to work for St. John’s of Lattingtown, New York, and Trinity Church in Newport, Rhode Island, helping both parishes develop successful capital campaigns to ensure their vitality and long-term strength. In 2014, he received the Bishop’s Medal for distinguished service to the Diocese of Long Island.

From 2001 to 2006, he served as Chairman of the Board of Claremont Graduate University, where he and his wife, Anne, established the Anne and Larry Glenn Endowed Fellowship. Larry also served for more than 15 years on the Board of the IYRS School of Technology and Trades, and in 2023 received the IYRS Wave Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to maritime education and the broader community.

He met the love of his life, Anne d’Arcy Dunlaevy, at a birthday party in 1942. Her parents recalled that he pushed her into a mud puddle, which delayed the romance until the two reconnected in their late teens and began a lifelong love affair. They married in 1964 and raised three children, who were always included in their many adventures on land and sea.

Larry and Anne loved sailing together—both cruising and racing—on a series of boats named Runaway. He especially loved offshore racing with family and friends. Among other accomplishments, he completed a Trans-Atlantic race in 1963, the Buenos Aires to Rio race in 1962, and at least 15 Newport to Bermuda Races, eight of them with Anne and their kids on their J/44 Runaway. He was happiest and most himself at sea, in the wee hours, sitting in a cockpit with good shipmates. Though a skilled skipper and navigator, he begrudgingly (but admiringly) conceded that Anne was the better driver. They were inseparable as a team, and their ability to work together was a testament to the extraordinary quality of their love and respect for each other, and the joy they took in being together.

Larry proudly served as Commodore of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club and New York Station Rear Commodore of the Cruising Club of America. He was a member of the New York Yacht Club, the North American Station of Scandinavian Yacht Clubs and Nyländska Jaktklubben, Storm Trysail Club, and the Newport Reading Room.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Anne; their children, Larry Glenn (Fabiana Lutti-Glenn), D'Arcy Carr (Jason Carr), and Allison Witton (Karl Witton); and grandchildren Campbell, Madeleine, Stella, Grace, and Mila, along with his many nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

He was loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed as he joins his siblings—Joseph Wooderson Glenn, Sarah Stokes Meyer, and William Love Glenn—and many shipmates in heaven.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, Newport, RI, on Friday, January 30th at 2:00 PM.
