Leonard James Petze

May 5, 1942 — Jun 16, 2026

Leonard James "Lennie" Petze, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a towering figure in the music industry, passed away on June 16, 2026, in Providence, Rhode Island. He was 84 years old.

Born on May 5, 1942, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, Lennie grew up in a lively multi-family home with his parents, sisters, uncle, aunt, and cousins. His childhood was filled with sports, fishing at Whitman's Pond, and music-a passion that would shape his life. Inspired by playing instruments with his father and sisters and the revolutionary style of Elvis Presley, Lennie discovered his love for music at an early age.

As a teenager, Lennie formed The Rhythm Rockers and later The Rondels, a groundbreaking Boston-area rock and roll band. The Rondels achieved national success when their recording "Back Beat No. 1" reached the Billboard Hot 100 and earned them an appearance on American Bandstand. This early success set the stage for Lennie's extraordinary career in the music industry.

After his performing career, Lennie transitioned to the recording industry, where he became one of the most influential talent executives and producers of his time. Beginning in promotion and artist development with various record labels, Lennie joined Epic Records in 1970. Over the next several decades, he rose to become Vice President of A&R and later Senior Vice President for Epic and Portrait Records. Renowned for his exceptional ability to recognize talent and develop artists into international stars, Lennie earned over 100 Gold, Platinum, and

Multi-Platinum awards during his illustrious career.

Among his most notable achievements was signing the band Boston after hearing their demo in 1975. Their debut album became one of the most successful in music history and established Boston as one of rock's defining acts. Lennie also signed and developed numerous major artists, including Cyndi Lauper, Sade, Eddy Grant, Aldo Nova, Saga, Europe, Heatwave, Accept, Danger Danger, and many others. As head of Portrait Records, he revitalized the label with groundbreaking successes such as Cyndi Lauper's debut album She's So Unusual and Sade's Diamond Life, both of which launched internationally acclaimed careers.

Lennie's commitment to the New England music community remained steadfast throughout his career. He championed Boston-area artists such as 'Til Tuesday, Orchestra Luna, Barry Goudreau's Orion The Hunter, Face to Face, Livingston Taylor, Phil Gentile, and others-helping bring national attention to the region's rich musical talent.

Following his tenure at CBS and Sony Music, Lennie founded Petze Music Group and later Aureus Records. Even in semi-retirement, he continued to mentor musicians as a producer and advocate for emerging talent.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Lennie cherished his family above all else. At just 18 years old, he married Cecile-his classmate since sixth grade-and together they built a life filled with love and devotion that spanned more than six decades. Their relationship was a true partnership rooted in respect and care.

Together, Lennie and Cecile began to conquer life's challenges as his career in music advanced. Moving his family proved to be a positive career move but the time they spent raising their children in Stamford, Connecticut was a great time in his life. With priorities clear, Lennie always made time for family and dinnertime was sacred. Whether it was a family favorite prepared by Cecile or at one of his many preferred restaurants, meals were an event filled with love and laughter. With his larger-than-life personality and kind nature Lennie made friends wherever he went, and in Stamford he made many.

Lennie had a connection to Cape Cod and whenever possible spent weekends and summer months near the water with family. Driven by quality time together, the house overflowed with his children, extended family and friends enjoying clamming, skiing, boating and fishing. Boating on "Sea Bop" or "Imagine," became a favorite activity guided by Lennie's steady hand as captain of the ship.

In recent years Lennie split his time between Florida during winters-soaking up sunshine by the beach or pool with Cecile and friends-and Rhode Island during summers where he lived with Cecile and their daughter's family while staying close to all their children and grandchildren. He delighted in cheering for his grandchildren in their many accomplishments and games, spending time with neighbors, going on trips, adding to his list of favorite restaurants, shopping for the latest styles of shoes and clothes, watching New England and Boston sports teams and "tinkering" in his studio.

Lennie's greatest joy came from being surrounded by family: rocking babies and giving tickles as "Papa," attending baseball and football games or band concerts for grandchildren Anthony; Dominic; Michael Petze; Jennifer (Jeremy) Solberg; Jeffrey Smith; Elise; Carson; Tristan Conheeny-and great-grandchildren Jackson & Jasper Solberg brought him immense pride & happiness while providing a larger than life figure in the lives of those who adored him.

Through it all, Cecile was his true north. A love story for more that 65 years, a man who adored his wife and would often give her credit for the life they built together. Their relationship was an example to others, rooted in the respect and care he had for his best friend and wife.

Lennie is survived by Cecile; children Richard (Joni); Joseph (Donna Golia); Laura (Jeffrey Smith); Jennifer (Jared Conheeny). Preceded in death by his parents Alphonso J. and Laura A. (LaRocco) Petze and sister Gloria Hughes but survived lovingly remembered alongside sister Rita Scace, nieces, nephews, extended kin alike whose lives enriched through knowing him too!

A man accomplished not just professionally but personally leaves behind legacy far-reaching integrity, vision, belief power, great music, dedication, family kindness relationships proving indeed nice guys finish first remembered warmly forevermore!
