It is with great sorrow that we share the peaceful passing of Lloyd Thomas Northup Jr. on July 28, 2026, surrounded by his high school sweetheart, his beloved wife of 68 years, Rose Laranjo Northup, and his devoted family.

A lifelong resident of Newport, Rhode Island, Lloyd was born on October 12, 1938, to Mary Botelho Northup and Lloyd Thomas Northup Sr. He was a direct descendant of many City of Newport and Rhode Island Founders, as well as several Mayflower passengers.

Lloyd proudly served in the National Guard. As a youth he excelled in football and baseball, and continued his passion for sports throughout his lifetime. An avid outdoorsman, Lloyd found great joy in fishing and boating. He was a former member of the Newport County Saltwater Fishing Club, where he earned many prizes for his fishing accomplishments.

Lloyd had remarkable talent as a seashell artist, transforming treasures from the sea into beautiful home décor and handcrafted jewelry that reflected his love of the ocean. Lloyd also had a lifelong passion for gardening. His exceptional talent earned him numerous awards, including the Best Overall Garden City of Newport award from Newport in Bloom.

Professionally, Lloyd enjoyed a distinguished 35-year career with Raytheon, where he served as a foreman and supervisor in the Transducer Department. His knowledge and expertise were so highly regarded that the company sent him to Italy on multiple occasions to train employees and help establish a manufacturing facility there. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards in recognition of his technical improvements, cost saving measures, and leadership.

After retirement, Lloyd and Rose purchased an oceanfront condominium in Hillsboro Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed their winters being close to their beloved son. Together they shared a love of travel, exploring the United States and many foreign countries. They especially enjoyed visiting their family homes in the Azores and looked forward to their many cruises.

Lloyd was a faithful member of Jesus Saviour Church and, above all else, cherished his family. He leaves behind his loving daughters, Rose Northup Hehl and her husband, Frank, of Middletown, their children Robert Burns (Melissa), Patrick Burns (Amanda) and Amanda Hehl; and Anne Northup Burns and her husband, Patrick, of Portsmouth and Newport, and their children Chelsea Burns, Madison O'Loughlin (Stephen), and Connor Burns (Courtney). He is also survived by his treasured great grandchildren Devin, Ryan, Lily, Thomas, Caylee, Corey, Aidan, and Liam.

Lloyd was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Helen Ruggeri; and his beloved son, Lloyd Thomas Northup III. He will be deeply missed by his godchildren, many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Lloyd will be remembered for his positive attitude and valiant strength in the face of health challenges, his devotion to his family, his intelligence, handiness, willingness to help others, and his fabulous cookouts, lobster and clam boils, crabs and feasts.

In honor of Lloyd's keen sense of humor, do something today to make someone smile. There could be no finer tribute to a life so well lived.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, July 31 from 4:00-7:00pm at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 1 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am in Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, Newport. Burial will follow at St. Columba Catholic Cemetery, Middletown.
