Newport, RI - Lois A. Smith Berthold, 98, of 70 Harrison Avenue Newport, RI, formerly of 265 Prospect Avenue, Middletown, RI, died Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Village House Nursing Home, Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Herman L. Berth. Born in East Bideford, Prince Edward Island, Canada on January 27, 1905, she was the daughter of the late James Warburton Smith and Alice Maude Mary Garland Smith. Mrs. Berthold came to the United States as a young woman and settled in North Attleboro, MA., where she met her late husband Herman L. Berthold. They moved to Newport, RI, in 1934. Mrs. Berthold was a longtime communicant of Trinity Church. She had worked in sales briefly and also was a caregiver to the elderly. She is survived by three daughters Margery E. Silvia and Lee Barker both of Middletown, RI, Helen M. Fitzgerald of Newport, RI, twelve grandchildren, seventeen greatgrandchilldren, one great greatgranddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Berthold was the mother of the late George H. Berthold, Clara L. Tasker, Barbara A. Boscia and Lois Annie Berthold and sister of the of the late Clayton Smith, Kenneth Smith, Annie Smallman, Cora Harrison, Helen Kaye. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at 10:00 am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will follow in Woodlawn-North Purchase Cemetery in Attleboro, MA. Donations in her memory may be made to the Village House Nursing Home, Special Care Unit, 70 Harrison Avenue, Newport, RI 02840, orto the Seamans Church Institute, 18 Market Street, Newport, RI 02840.
