Lorraine A. Smith, 80, of Newport, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024, in Providence, RI. She was the wife of the late Clifford Smith.
Born in New York, Lorraine was the daughter of the late Arthur and Agnes (Donovan) Hinsch. She graduated from Forest Hills High School and spent decades in her Rego Park community, attending weekly church services, volunteering, and being an active community member at the Resurrection-Ascension Parish. Living on a Rego Park block filled with wonderful neighbors, friends and family, she was known for always having time for anyone who wanted or needed to have a chat.
Lorraine's career was in telecommunications, working diligently for both AT&T and Verizon, where she traveled to Boston, Washington D.C., and across the U.S. representing the company. After years of distinguished service, she retired early and enjoyed the next chapter of her life.
In her retirement she acquiesced to her golf loving husband and learned to play. She cherished the time being outside and active with people she adored, especially on their favorite course, Montauk Downs. She continued to find new ways to challenge herself. Learning yoga in her 60's and practicing with her daughter, Liz, became an activity she looked forward to.
Throughout her life, Lorraine loved spending time with her friends and family at the beach. Whether this was spurred on by her daughter or husband's love of the coast or her own, she created many sandy memories with her husband, Cliff in Montauk, Long Island, and the Caribbean islands, especially St. Martin.
Throughout Lorraine's life, she surrounded herself with a furry family; cats and dogs were always a cherished part of her life.
Lorraine leaves her daughter Elizabeth Smith (Guillermo) of Newport, RI, stepson Gary Smith of Bellmore, NY and her brother Gary Hinsch (Christine) of Wilmington, NC. In addition to close friends, cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her beloved brother, Arthur.
