It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Lucy Labonite (Gayta) Marum, a beloved mother, grandmother, godmother, wife, sister, auntie, and friend, who passed away on July 8, 2026. Born on March 10, 1952 in Barcelona, Sorsogon, Philippines, Lucy built a life full of generosity, devotion, tenderness, and love.
Lucy graduated from Gubat National High School in Gubat, Philippines. After moving to the United States in 1983, she began work at Transcom Electronics as a circuitry installer. She also worked as a housekeeper at both Econo Lodge and Howard Johnson. Prior to retirement, she worked as an assembler at Hodges Badge Company, where she gained lifelong friends. She enjoyed sharing meals with family and friends, gardening, going to the casino, and being part of the Filipino-American Association of Newport, RI.
She gave generously through helping her loved ones, both near and far. Lucy's life encompassed an aura of patience, faith, and selflessness. Her family fondly remembers Lucy giving cookies and ice cream to her grandsons before dinner, and giving unlimited treats to her grand-dogs, Yoshi and Mochi. Lucy's sweet voice and Tagalog accent made for some memorable trademark phrases, such as, "you look so nice, honey" "no running, no running," and "it's nice; you want it?" Her happiest moments in life were holding her grandsons when they were babies, enjoying Filipino cuisine, speaking Tagalog with her relatives in the Philippines, and proudly wearing her ''bling-bling" fashion accessories. To those who knew her, she would always make you feel special and valued.
Lucy is survived by her loving son, Tim Marum and his wife Shelby of East Providence, her two cherished grandsons Timmy and Jimmy, her sisters-in-law Kathy Marum of Fall River, Ronnie Holt (Blackie) of Attleboro, and Gail Marum of Westport, her twin sister Luz Gayta Escandor and sister Clarita Gayta Ofalsa of the Philippines, her nieces and nephews, who lovingly called her "Mama Baby," and many cousins and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Mariamito and Rosario (Labonite) Gayta, her husband of 40 years Mathew Marum, her sister Conchita Gayta, her brother Joel Gayta, her sister-in-law Frances Marum, and brother-in-law Mike Marum.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 18th at 9:00 AM at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Portsmouth, RI. A reception will follow and will be announced at the service. To honor Lucy, please consider donating to The Parkinson's Foundation at parkinson.org or the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
