Newport, RI - Luis P. Colon, 53, of 15 John H. Chafee Blvd., Newport, RI, died Friday, January 9, 2009 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI. He was the husband of Beverly McDowell. Born in New York, NY on May 15, 1955, he was the son of the late Jose and Pastora Colon Colon.Mr. Colon worked in the Maintenance Department at the Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina. He loved music, especially the oldies, salsa and jazz. Mr. Colon loved nature, fishing, and Native American culture. He was also very handy, fixing everything from cars to projects around the house. Mr. Colon was a loving and devoted grandfather and a dedicated family man. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Teresa A. Blair, Carlos M. Colon, Elizabeth Cruz, Luis P. McDowell all of Newport, RI, Jennifer Shaffer of Tennessee, Yolanda D. McDowell, Maria J. Colon, Apollo C. McDowell, Venus C. McDowell, Antonio C. McDowell and Angelo C. McDowell all of Newport, RI, his siblings, Iris Erausquin of Middletown, RI, Jose J. Colon of Virginia, Raymond Colon, Carlos Colon, Ruth Colon all of Middletown, RI and Frank Effrem of Virginia, seven grandsons, seven granddaughters, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.He was the brother of the late Jose E. Colon. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2009, at 12:00 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2009, from 10am-12pm in the funeral home.
