Manuel E. Paiva

Manuel E. "Sonny" Paiva, of King Phillip Street, Portsmouth died Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at home in Portsmouth. Manuel was born May 19, 1932 in Fall River, MA, the son of the late Manuel P. Paiva and Annie (Czerwinski) Paiva. Sonny grew up in Fall River and joined the Navy during the Korean War. He served for 3 years including time on the destroyer USS Soley (DD707). After his active duty, he worked as a mechanic at Towne Motors Tiverton, then many years at the Naval Station in Newport.He was a member of the American Men's Bowling League in Westport, MA and an avid collector, cars, clocks and bells. He was also a member of the Down Shifters Car Club.He is survived by his wife Lillie (Cook) Paiva of Portsmouth, his children Debi Cabral of St. Petersburg, FL, Dwayne Paiva of Middletown, RI, Sunni Freitas of Portsmouth, RI, and David Paiva and his wife Natashia of Tiverton. He also leaves 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, and two brothers, David Paiva of Fall River, MA and Phillip Paiva of Assonet, MA. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Jenny, Mary, and Joanne.Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Friday, July 14, 2017 from 5:00-9:00 pm at Connors Funeral Home 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
