Middletown, RI - Manuel S. Escobar, 77, of 833 Forest Park, Middletown, RI, died Sunday, February 10, 2008 at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, RI. He was the husband of Ana Pereira Escobar. Born in Fayal, the Azores, on December 24, 1930, he was the son of the late Antonio Silva and Clara deMello Escobar.Mr. Escobar moved to Rhode Island from the Azores in 1959. He first started work as a landscaper for T. J. Brown then went on to the Glen Farm in Portsmouth, Howard Johnsons Hotel and Fred Kirby Landscaping. He also worked at the Middletown Town Hall and the Middletown Public Works Department. In what ever spare time he could find he was always landscaping. Mr. Escobar was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church. Besides his wife of 54 years, he is survived by his nephews Fr. Joseph Escobar of Providence, RI, Durval Goulart of Cranston, RI and Manuel Furtado of Fall River, MA and many other nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Antonio Escobar, Manuel Escobar, Jose Escobar, Lucy Oliveira, Maria Silva, Maria Furtado and Clara Brandao. His funeral will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2008, at 9:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, from 2-4 and 7-9, in the funeral home.
