Maria Salom (Silva) Ferreira, 88, formerly of Pope Street, Newport, died on Monday, September 10, 2018, at St. Elizabeths Manor, Bristol, R.I.She was the wife of the late Gabriel J. FerreiraBorn on May 28, 1930, in Fayal, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Jos and Jezuina (Rodrigues) Silva.She is survived by her children, Mario Ferreira and his wife Christine of Newport, and Gabriel S. Ferreira and his wife Kathy of Bristol. She leaves her grandchildren Michael Ferreira and (his wife Brooke and great-grandchildren Ryan and Lily), Timothy Ferreira (and his wife Alison and great-granddaughters Emery and Alice), all of Newport as well as grandsons Christopher and Matthew Ferreira of Bristol.She also leaves her brothers Americo Silva of East Providence and Mario Silva of Middletown as well as many loved nieces and nephews.She was the sister of the late Joseph Silva, Lucy Rodrigues, and Theresa Rodrigues.Mrs. Ferreira was employed by Salve Regina College, Jesus Saviour Church Rectory and St. Marys Church Rectory as a cook and housekeeper, and for many years as a cook for Dr. Norbert Zielinski.Mrs. Ferreira was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church where she was a member of the Jesus Saviour Rosary Sodality and an active participant in the kitchen and bakery booth of the annual summer bazaar. She was a member of the Vasco da Gama Holy Ghost Society. For over 20 years she was instrumental in the success of the Seven Castles Club Scholarship drives by making her homemade meatballs for the clubs annual Spaghetti Dinner.She enjoyed the Jesus Saviour Holy Ghost Domingas and hosted several over the years at her home in Newport. She could always be found in her rocking chair with her rosary beads in hand. She loved cooking, visiting, conversing, walking, and laughing with family and friends, and knitting, especially for her grandchildren.Calling hours will be held Wednesday, September 12, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be Thursday at 9:30 AM from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway at Vernon Avenue, Newport.
