Marie A. Tomkus, 64, of Middletown, passed away, Friday, May 25, 2018 in Newport Hospital. Born in Rockford, IL, she was the daughter of the late Edward P. and Phyllis R. (Andrukaitis) Tomkus.
She decided to follow her brother to Newport, when he was stationed for the Navy. She grew a fond love for the beauty of Newport and decided to stay permanentlty.
Marie leaves her son Jacob Tomkus and his significant other Jacquie Fernandes of Hyannis, MA, her grandchildren, William and Ciara Young, Taj, Jacob Jr., Jazzelle, Jayda and Jasarah Tomkus as well as her brother and sisters, David Tomkus, VickyTomkus and Patty Prouty, along with many nieces and nephewy
She was predeceased by Edward, Susie and Steven Tomkus.
She worked as a cook in several Newport restaurants. Then later took on a role as a Teachers Assistant for the Head Start Program. She spent the last of her working years as a social worker, advocating for families in her community. She built many special friendships through this program and within her neighborhoods that meant a lot to her.
Marie loved gardening and poetry. Most of all, she loved her family. Her son and grandchildren were her world.
Calling hours will be held Sunday, June 3, 2018 from 2:00PM to 5:00PM in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
Per Maries request, she asked before her passing, a celebration of life to take place. This reception will follow calling hours and will be held at the Stone Mill Lodge in Newport, 32 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Blvd. Newport.
Burial will be private.
