Marie Rita (Sandonato) Crandall, 58, of Canton, MA, passed away on December 24, 2018 at Mass General Hospital in Boston. She was the wife of Michael Crandall for 37 years.
Marie was born in Newport, RI to Joseph Sandonato and Gina (DEramo) Sandonato. She grew up in Middletown, graduated Middletown High School in 1978, and received her degree in French and Psychology from Emmanuel College in Boston. During her time at Emmanuel, she did a semester abroad in Italy. She began her teaching career at the Brockton Christian High School.
After teaching at Brockton Christian High School, Marie and Michael moved to Germany as members of the Summer Institute of Linguistics and Wycliffe Bible Translators. For 15 years, she and Michael lived in Germany where they did advanced field work in the Persian related language called Zaza. During this time, she enrolled at Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany where she earned her Masters Degree in Linguistics. Over the years of this education, she became fluent in six different languages.
Marie and Michael returned to the US and the classroom to teach at The Stony Brook School, a Jr. and Sr. High School in Stony Brook, Long Island. She was a dorm parent and French teacher at Stony Brook School for 11 years. Five years ago, Marie took a position at Boston Trinity Academy as a French teacher and Foreign Language Department Chair.
Marie had a love of cooking and baking, which her family members, friends, and students often benefitted from. She and her husband have been members of Ruggles Baptist Church in Boston since their wedding in 1981. She was a loving, caring, hospitable woman with a deep faith in and love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Marie is survived by her husband Michael Crandall of Canton, MA, her parents Joseph and Gina Sandonato of Middletown, her brother Anthony Sandonato also of Middletown, and her nieces Giuliana and Giovanna Sandonato, her first cousins Rita (Sandonato) Mayo and Pia (Sandonato) Pasquale, her sisters-in-law Karen Simpson, Joan Hulse, Paula Killian, and Betsy Neary; and many more extended relatives in both the Sandonato and Crandall families.
Calling Hours will be held Friday, December, 28 2018 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Ave, Newport, RI.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at 10:00 AM at the Hambly Funeral Home with burial to follow at St. Columba Catholic Cemetery, Middletown.
