Marjorie J Brownell

Jun 15, 1940 — Sep 10, 2026

MIDDLETOWN- Marjorie (Margie) J. Brownell, 86, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on June 15, 1940, in Newport, Rhode Island, Margie lived a life filled with generosity, kindness, and love for those around her.

Margie graduated from St. Catherine's Academy in Newport and Joanne's Hairdressing Academy in Providence. She loved her career as a hairdresser and proudly worked in the profession for 57 years. Her passion for learning never faded, and she continued her professional education by attending classes at Vidal Sassoon in London and the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis.

Growing up as a "Point Hummer" with her beloved dog, Rover, Margie could often be found picking tomatoes in her neighbors' gardens. Later in life, as a fabulous baker, she returned the favor to friends and neighbors with cakes, cookies and other delicious baked goods. At family gatherings, there was always a spirited competition to see who could get a piece of her famous, mouthwatering cake.

Margie loved traveling with her sister, Aggie, and relished any shopping trip that included ice cream with her daughter Jennie and sister Aggie. While she did not have grandchildren, she had several beloved "furbabies" whom she spoiled with sleepovers, treats, and plenty of love. When she wasn't busy caring for others, Margie could often be found walking along the beach or curled up with a good book and a cup of tea.

Margie's Catholic faith was an important part of her life and was reflected in her strength, resilience, generosity, and the special way she made everyone she met feel valued and loved.

Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert M. Brownell Jr., and her parents, Herbert and Agnes Donovan (Pike).

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her son, Carl Brownell (Emelina); her daughter, Jennifer (Jennie) Brownell; her sister, Agnes (Aggie) Torbett; her brothers, Herbert (Herbie) Donovan and Thayer Donovan (Liddy); and her ten nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on September 16, 2026, followed by a Mass at St. Lucy's Church 909 West Main Road, Middletown at 10:00 a.m.

Burial will immediately follow at Portsmouth Cemetery, Turnpike Ave., Portsmouth.

The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the nursing and hospice staff at Newport Hospital for their care, compassion, and support during Margie's final days.

Margie's warmth, generosity, faith, and wonderful sense of humor will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
