MIDDLETOWN - Mary Kardel Herterick, 90, resident of the John Clarke Retirement Home, died peacefully Thursday, May 05, 2016. She is now reunited with her husband of 49 years William M. Herterick who predeceased her on Veteran's Day in 1994. As a youth, Mary attended local Catholic schools, and during World War II she worked at the Naval Torpedo Station in support of the war effort. Afterwards, she became a devoted mother who focused on raising her children and helping her husband's many businesses. Mary was a daily communicant of St Lucy's Parish prior to moving into John Clarke.Mary was born to Susan and Eugene Kardel in Newport on 12/25/1925. Mary was one of eight children and is survived by two sisters, Barbara Kardel Henriques and Carol Kardel Craft along with one brother, Paul Kardel. She leaves her son, Daniel Herterick of Cape Coral, Florida and her daughter, Elizabeth Hayes and son-in-law Edward Hayes of Portsmouth. She leaves 7 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.Funeral services will be held Monday, May 9, 2016, at 8:00AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:00AM in St. Lucy's Church, West Main Road, Middletown. Burial will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
