Mary Judith Nielson Hagerty, 74, of 60 Kay Street Newport, died Friday, October 18, 2002 at Rhode Island Hospital Providence, RI, after a brave struggle with lung cancer. She was the wife of the late Francis Henry Hagerty Jr. Born in Newport, RI on October 29, 1927, she was the daughter of the late William C and Helen G. Lavery Nielson. Mrs. Hagerty attended Newport public schools and graduated from Rogers High School in 1945. She attended Rhode Island School of Design and was a graduate of the two-year program at Katherine Gibbs School in Providence. She held executive secretarial positions with the Reader?s Digest, WGBH, and various legal and advertising firms. Mrs. Hagerty was a member of St. George?s Episcopal Church in Newport. She was active in charity and volunteer work and spent many years teaching swimming to handicapped children. She was an avid swimmer, gardener, traveler and interior decorator as well as a member of the Newport Book Club. She is survived by three sons James D. Hagerty of Tiverton, RI, Matthew G. Hagerty and William F. Hagerty both of Newport, RI, her daughter Ellen M. Sconyers of Newport, RI, her sister Joan DeMello of Portsmouth, RI, and three granddaughters Emma Grace, Sara Jane and Mary Anne Sconyers all of Newport. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2002, at 10:00AM, in St. Georges Episcopal, 14 Rhode Island Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown.
