Mary Logothets Michael, 86, of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully at home on
July 4, 2026. Mary was the loving wife of the late Arthur Michael for 38 years. She was
devoted to her family, her Greek Orthodox faith and heritage, and a retired employee of Newport
Public Schools.
Mary was born in Newport to Stamos K. and Stamatia D. Logothets, both natives of Skiathos,
Greece. She attended Rogers High School, where she worked in the Guidance Office during her
senior year. Upon graduating, Mary immediately began her career with Newport Public Schools,
where she dedicated 45 years of service. She started in the Principal's Office at Rogers High
School and then spent the majority of her career in the Business Office before retiring.
Throughout her life, Mary was an active member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. She
served her parish in many roles, including as a member of the Parish Council and the
Daughters of Penelope. She was also a faithful member of the church choir, where she sang
from the age of 12, and volunteered at the parish's annual Hellenic Festival.
As a descendant of the first Greek settlers to arrive in Newport, Mary took great pride in her
heritage. She was a charter member of both the Island of Skiathos Organization and the
Newport-Skiathos Sister City Club, serving on the boards of each. Mary contributed in
establishing the sister city relationship between Newport and Skiathos, Greece. Through her
leadership, she helped host numerous events strengthening the cultural and historical ties
between Newport and Skiathos.
Mary's greatest joy in life was spending time with her loving family. She will be remembered for
her warm, generous, and selfless nature, and for the love, grace, and kindness she shared with
everyone around her.
Mary is survived by her son, John Michael, and daughter, Kathryn Williams (John) and her
children Mary and Stephanie Williams; her sister-in-law Myrsine Logothets, her Goddaughter,
Kathryn McKeon (Gary Fenster) and her children William, Constantine, and Myrsine McKeon.
In addition, Mary leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Mary is preceded in death by her beloved family members; her husband, Arthur Michael, her
brother, Constantine "Gus" Logothets, and her Godchildren, Stamatia "Tammy" and Christina
Logothets.
