It is with much sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Mary C. Tracy at the age of 100 on March 30, 2026. Her life was a testament to hard work, boundless love, and steadfast devotion to those she cherished most.

Mary was born on June 15, 1925 in Middletown, Rhode Island, one of five children born to Joseph A. and Mary (Silvia) Cardoza.

She grew up on Sunnyfields Farm and the Gray Craig Estate where her father was a chauffeur and mechanic. After losing both her parents by the age of 10, Mary was raised by other family members and primarily her loving Aunt Mary and Uncle Frank P. Silvia. She attended Middletown Public schools, Sacred Hearts Academy in Fall River, MA, and along with her cousin Madeleine Cardoza, graduated high school from St Catherine's Academy in Newport, RI in 1944.

On January 19, 1952, she was married to Edward F. Tracy, Jr. at St. Joseph's Church in Newport, RI. They shared 47 years of marriage and memories until his passing on May 31, 2000.

Mary had an incredibly strong work ethic. She was a telephone operator at Newport Hospital, worked at the First National grocery store as a cashier, was a bookkeeper at the Spouting Rock Beach Association (better known as Bailey's Beach), and the job she most enjoyed was as bookkeeper at St. George's School in Middletown, RI.

An avid reader and lifelong learner, Mary was known for her quick wit, independent spirit, and profound love for her family. Her most cherished role was that of "Grammy." She took immeasurable pride and joy in her grandchildren and treasured every moment spent with them.

Mary is survived by her three devoted children, Regina Tracy of Salem, NH, Edward F. Tracy III of Middletown, RI, and Susan Durant and her husband John of Portsmouth, RI. She also leaves 5 beloved grandchildren, Henry Ridge (wife Kristin) of Coventry, RI, Molly Tracy-Harris (husband Trey) of Providence, RI, Kylie Tracy of Middletown, RI, and Julia Durant and Olivia Durant of Portsmouth, RI. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and siblings Philip, William, Joseph and Anna Cardoza.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Church on Spring Street in Newport, RI on Monday, April 6, 2026 at 10am. In accordance with her wishes, calling hours are omitted.
