Maureen C. Girr

Maureen C. Girr, 72, of Newport died Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Mass General Hospital in Boston, MA. Maureen was born April 24, 1945 in Newport, RI, the daughter of the late Fred and Frances (Curran) Gray. She was the wife and best friend of James A. Girr (Jack) of Newport. She and Jack celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in November of 2016. Well known to her many friends and family as Rusty, she was a lifelong Newport resident. Rusty graduated from Rogers High School and attended Rhode Island College. Over the years, she worked as a realtor, a technical editor in the defense industry and as a listing agent in the yachting industry. Rusty had a passion for her rescued pets, crosswords, reading, cooking and was proud of her participation as a Jeopardy contestant. She is survived by her husband, James A. Girr, and two daughters, Kathryn Dube of Enfield, CT and Rebecca Reilly and her husband, John, of St. Louis, MO. She also leaves three grandchildren, Karolyn, Katie and Jack Reilly, her niece, Melissa Cox Desjardins and nephew Robert Cox.She is predeceased by her sister Elinor Cox. Her family will be receiving friends on Friday, June 2 from 1:00-4:00 pm at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport RI. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the South Kingston Animal Shelter or The Myositis Association.
